Natasha Richardson, who died after a skiing accident this week and who I loved in Parent Trap, supported the amfAR Foundation for AIDS research. According to the amfAR Foundation website, the organization was founded in 1985 and amfAR is dedicated to ending the global AIDS epidemic through innovative research. With the freedom and flexibility to respond quickly to emerging areas of scientific promise, amfAR plays a catalytic role in accelerating the pace of HIV/AIDS research and achieving real breakthroughs. amfAR-funded research has increased our understanding of HIV and has helped lay the groundwork for major advances in the study and treatment of HIV/AIDS. Since 1985, amfAR has invested nearly $275 million in its mission and has awarded grants to more than 2,000 research teams worldwide.

Ron Silver (who although he had a huge list of accomplishments, I personally loved him in the sitcom Victoria's Closet) was co-founder of The Creative Coalition, a premier nonprofit, nonpartisan social and political advocacy organization of the entertainment industry. It was founded in 1989 by prominent figures in the creative community, including actors Alec Baldwin, Ron Silver, Christopher Reeve, Susan Sarandon, Blair Brown and Stephen Collins, TCC educates and mobilizes leaders in the arts community on issues of public importance, specifically in the areas of First Amendment rights, arts advocacy and public education.
