Sensei Mike Capaldi breaks some wood pieces in shopping center's parking lot without touching them. Of all places, including his own studio and dojo; why would he perform this stunt on a sidewalk of some shopping mall?

By the way, even if the character at the bottom right was not upside-down, the text still makes no sense in Japanese.

Alan's best guess is that they took the word Oseibo (meaning "year-end present"), added a couple other characters for seasoning and mixed and mashed for a Japanese word-soup puree.

Tai-San style mind break, indeed.

I call it bullshit.

Happy Holidays!

See you next year!

Rihanna to Rock Out at Charity Inaugural Ball

On January 20th the songstress will headline the Recording Industry Association of America's charity ball benefiting Feeding America. She'll be joining the likes of Will Smith who says he will also be in D.C. for the Inauguration. ""We'll go there and just cry - probably two, three days in a row. Just lots of crying. We'll probably cheer a lot, too," he told reporters at the L.A. premiere of Seven Pounds.

Paris Who?

A few tidbits from Esquire about the oh-so-famous Paris Hilton we may not have known:

She only wears a dress once. Afterward she gives them to charities and they auction them off to help people with breast cancer, AIDS, and multiple sclerosis.

Although hard to believe, Hilton actually does work. She starts her morning at 7 a.m. making phone calls and says she works until 1 a.m.

She uses her fragrances to her advantage. With the help of the pheromones, it helps with the attraction.

Her grandma used to call her Marilyn Monroe, making her always aspire to be a blond icon ever since she was little.

Quote of the Day

"She's going to be onstage, she's doing All My Sons on Broadway. I've got some things planned tonight, I've been kind of surprising her throughout the week with things . . . I like romance, so you've got to think about these things, you've got to know the right thing and pay attention throughout the year. Know your lady — the flowers, what kind she likes." - Tom Cruise on wife Katie Holmes's 30th bday!

The Best of 2008

Thanks to New York's Daily News, they have put together some of this year's most memorable quotes from the mouths of, shall we say, some of our favorite celebs:

"You know what? I am actually not that much into voting. I think it's kind of crazy that a woman is running, because I think that women deal with a lot of emotions and menopause and PMS and stuff. Like, I'm so moody all the time. I know I couldn't be able to run a country 'cause I'd be crying one day and yelling at people the next day, you know?" - Brooke Hogan on her reality show.

"Jesus was persecuted, and I'm going to get persecuted, you know?" - Heidi Montag to USA Today.

"I cried my eyelashes off." - Oprah Winfrey on Barack Obama's win in November.

"This song is for the emotionally retarded. You might know a few people who fall into that category. God knows I do." - Madonna shortly after her divorce became public.

"Somebody needs to step up and get this young woman into some quality care - and I do not apologize one whit, not one second, for trying to make this happen." - Dr. Phil on Britney Spears.

"Chace is built like a porcelain doll. I don't even know if he bleeds. He might have been crafted by Mattel. He has, like, the teen-idol genome. He's...beautiful." - Penn Badgley on costar Chace Crawford.

"I think it's really artsy. It wasn't in a skanky way. Annie took, like, a beautiful shot, and I thought that was really cool. That's what she wanted me to do, and you can't say no to Annie. She's so cute. She gets this puppy-dog look and you're like 'Okay.'" - Miley Cyrus on her controversial photo shoot for Vanity Fair.

Madonna Pays Up

Madonna and ex-hubby Guy Ritchie have reached a divorce settlement in which Ritchie will receive an amount between $76 million and $92 million. This includes the value of their country home in Ashcombe in western England as well as Punchbowl, their London pub. The singing star cited Ritchie's "unreasonable behavior" as the cause. The two were recently granted a preliminary "quickie divorce."

Tom Cruise Admits He Has Flaws ... Sorta

I went back, and looked at [the interview], and it was interesting. I thought about it a lot. [It concerned] a subject matter that's important. It's something that's been debated in the public, and that's what it should be. [But that's] not as I intended. In looking at myself, I came across as arrogant ... I didn't communicate it in a way I wanted to communicate. Also, that's not the way I am. That's not the person I am." - Tom Cruise addresses his previous interview with Matt Lauer three years ago on the Today Show.

It's a Boy for Naomi and Liev

Naomi Watts and her boyfriend Liev Shreiber have welcomed a baby boy into the world. "I can confirm Naomi and Liev had a baby boy yesterday," said Watts' rep. This is the second child for the happy couple whose first son Alexander Pete Shreiber was born on July 26, 2007.
A few years back there was a sitcom on NBC called Committed. In one episode, one of the lead character had some tattoo work done at New Orleans and it turned out to be something along the line of "of two men who love each other, you are the one plays the woman." Eventually he got the tattoo fixed to "Lemon Chicken."

Of course, that was only in a comedy sitcom.

No so!

Mariah Carey fueling pregnancy rumors

On a interview with Ellen DeGeneres, Mariah Carey got tricked into revealing what everyone is wondering: is the diva pregnant or not?

First her outfit was err, unusual. No tight, short dress, but very casual jeans and an ample blouse things she wouldnt normally wear.

Then when she refused to discuss whether or not she was pregnant, Ellen served her a nice glass of Dom Perignon champagne to celebrate the fact that she wasnt, which MC refused to drink. She first pretended that it was fatening, then that it was too early to start drinking Yeah right!

Its Britney, bitch!

Britney Spears come back is supposed to be original but she looks just like Madonna!

The pop princess celebrate her 6th album, Circus.

Guy Ritchie: single and twice as rich

Seems like Madonna and Guy Ritchie have come to an agreement on how to split her money in their divorce; because less face it: she was the bread-winner. He was worth $50 Million while the Material Girl is worth 10 times that amount.

So the estranged husband will receive $60 Million, their London manor and their London pub as a farewell gift.

Someone close to the movie director declared: Guy is his own man with his own money. Hes much too proud to start going after Madonnas millions. He doesnt want to get into a tug-of-war. He loves the children and would never jeopardize his relationship with them.

Hes actually more than two times richer than he was now that shes leaving him, so why stir steam up? Theres some good coming out of all this after all, at least for Guy!

Patrick Swayze sets the record straight

After many tabloids spread the rumor late last week that Patrick Swayzes cancer was generalized and that he couldnt walk anymore, the 56 year old actor felt the need to set the record straight on his condition by giving an exclusive interview to People magazine:

Pancreatic cancer is an aggressive disease and from the moment I was diagnosed, I knew I was in for the fight of my life. Its a battle, and so far, Ive been winning. Im one of the lucky few that responds well to treatment.

Its upsetting that the shoddy and reckless reporting from these publications cast a negative shadow on the positive and good fight Im fighting. For me, my family, and those close to me, it amounts to downright emotional cruelty. That makes me angry when hope is so precious.

He also points out that if he left the set of The Beast, on which hes currently working, its not because he cant walk anymore, but because it was the holidays. As in Thanksgiving.

And hes obviously thanking his fans for their love and support. The bottom line of what hes saying is: dont believe the hype.

A culture is only as great as its dreams, and its dreams are dreamed by artists. — Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard
Mark & Rachel pointed me to Victor Mair's recent post about the latest cover of Max Planck Institute's flagship publication, MaxPlanckForschung.

To honor the theme of the issue [China], the editors asked one of the journalists who worked for the magazine to find an elegant Chinese poem to grace the cover. This was the result:

No sooner had the journal fallen into the hands of Chinese readers than it set off a frenzy of indignation, uproarious laughter, and animated discussion.

This is a rough translation of what the text says:

With high salaries, we have cordially invited for an extended series of matinées

KK and Jiamei as directors, who will personally lead jade-like girls in the spring of youth,

Beauties from the north who have a distinguished air of elegance and allure,

Young housewives having figures that will turn you on;

Their enchanting and coquettish performance will begin within the next few days.

When the powers that be at MPI found out what the characters on the front of their journal actually said — they immediately issued the following heartfelt apology:

Dear Colleagues,

The cover of the most recent German-language edition of MaxPlanckForschung (3/2008) depicts a Chinese text which had been chosen by our editorial office in order to symbolically illustrate the magazine's focus on "China". Unfortunately, it has now transpired that this text contains inappropriate content of a suggestive nature.

Prior to publication, the editorial office had consulted a German sinologist for a translation of the relevant text. The sinologist concluded that the text in question depicted classical Chinese characters in a non-controversial context. To our sincere regret, however, it has now emerged that the text contains deeper levels of meaning, which are not immediately accessible to a non-native speaker.

By publishing this text we did in no way intend to cause any offence or embarrassment to our Chinese readers. The editors of MaxPlanckResearch sincerely regret this unfortunate error and would like to offer an unreserved apology to all of their Chinese readers for any upset or distress they may have caused.

The cover title has already been substituted in the online edition, and the English version of MaxPlanckForschung (MaxPlanckResearch, 4/2008) will be published with a different title.

We would ask you to forward this information to all Chinese scientists at your Institute. Please find attached the new version of the title. Perhaps you can distribute this print-out within your institute.

Here is the replacement cover:

NBA Star Alonzo Mourning Needs Urgent Help!

Alonzo Mourning (who will be featured here later this month!) knows what it's like to fight for his life and now he's hoping to help a 3-year-old boy do the same. Please read below and do what you can to spread the word...thanks. In this holiday season, a gift of life is the best gift of all.

Zo's Fund For Life Urges the Public to Join Campaign to "Give Omar Life"

Alonzo Mourning, NBA All-Star and Founder of Zo's Fund For Life, an organization Mourning launched shortly after he learned he would need an organ transplant announced that he is leading a campaign to quickly raise funds for a three-year-old boy named Omar Ferguson who is in desperate need of a liver transplant. The announcement was made during a news conference at the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Medical Center campus in Miami.

Little Omar lies in a hospital bed this holiday season at the Holtz Children's Hospital at UM/Jackson. He has been diagnosed with Biliary Atresia, a rare condition he acquired as a newborn in which the common bile duct between the liver and small intestine is blocked or absent. Most patients with this diagnosis will undergo a procedure as infants to remove the atretic biliary ducts outside the liver and attach the small intestine directly to the liver at the spot where bile is found or expected to drain in an effort to re-establish bile flow. If this procedure is done before two months of age, success is likely.

Omar was not fortunate enough to have received this procedure as an infant and as a result the blocked bile flow has caused severe liver cirrhosis which has led to liver failure. He is in end-stage cirrhosis experiencing complications including life-threatening intestinal bleeding, fluid retention in the abdomen (ascites), and abnormal blood ammonia levels which, if left untreated, can result in coma. The only effective treatment option for Omar to survive is a liver transplant.

Omar is without health insurance, so the only way for him to be placed on the transplant waiting list is when the total cost of the liver transplant, including physician and facility fees, of $300,000 is raised and paid to the hospital. Due to the severity of Omar's illness, he will be given priority once he is placed on the transplant waiting list. Liver transplant survival rates are excellent with over 90% survival in the first year and patients can move on to leading normal lives.

Zo's Fund for Life recognizes the importance of giving Omar the chance to live and is donating $50,000 towards his transplant. "Omar is a true fighter as most kids with this disease don't live past the age of two," said Mourning who is also a spokesperson for the Miami Transplant Institute at Jackson Memorial Hospital and the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine and serves on the Institutes advisory board. "Omar deserves a chance at life and with your help we can give him the gift of transplant that keeps on giving this holiday season."

"The child is in Holtz Children's Hospital and his condition is critical. He needs to have a liver transplant before he has more complications from his liver disease which could further compromise his outlook," said Andreas G. Tzakis, M.D., Ph.D., Director of Liver/GI Transplant Surgery, Director of the Miami Transplant Institute, and Professor of Surgery at the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Hospital and Miami Transplant Institute. "We are very thankful to Alonzo for his commitment to transplantation and help to the needy. His help could not have come at a better time."

In the spirit and season of giving, Mourning is urging the public to help save Omar's life and donate as much and as soon as possible. Show gratitude for your good fortune and give to those who are less fortunate, like Omar, because you can truly make a difference in his life today by donating to Zo's Fund for Life's "Give Omar Life" fund. Donations are tax-deductible and accepted by:

What a way to ring in the new year with Ms. Britney Spears on the cover of Glamour's January issue!

What '08 has been like: “This whole year has been a hell of a year for me. I have been working so hard on my album, but…I didn’t know exactly where I stood with everyone.”

On mom Lynne: “We butt heads the most, but we understand each other the most, too.”

Brit's New Year's resolution: “I would like to stop worrying so much, because I worry all the time. And to learn how to be happier, just in general.”

What we may not know: “I don’t like going out. I hate clubs. I hate being around too many people. I love my home and staying in bed and watching Dancing With the Stars or reading a Danielle Steel novel.”

Five years from now: “In five years I would like to be married and have a father figure for my kids, someone who is a provider and can be really stable. It’s hard doing it on your own. ”

For more with Britney, pick up the January issue when it hits newsstands this month.

Meet the New Baltimore Celebrity Examiner

The Spewker now reports from the Baltimore Celebrity ExaminerHonestly, I was hoping to avoid this. Don't you just hate when you visit a blog expecting to find good stuff and instead there's this final article? A final article directing you somewhere else?

Yeah, I hate that too. Which is why I've been holding off doing this. But the truth is, I shouldn't have waited so long.

It's become too difficult to write for The Spewker and my page at Examiner.com. For that reason, this blog has been temporarily suspended effective immediately. I may eventually come to regret this decision, but time constraints leave me no other choice.

Look at it this way, I'll still be doing juicy celebrity dish, original celebrity interviews, and reporting the Baltimore-Washington celebrity scene ... just not from here. At least not for now. Maybe when life becomes less hectic and there's more time I'll be back. Could happen. Don't rule it out.

In the meantime, The Spewker will continue to publish Twitter updates and new videos from time to time, but yeah, the blog has moved here.

The Baltimore Celebrity Examiner. Has a nice ring to it, don't ya think?
