3 Doors Down, Taylor Hicks, James Frey, Allison Winn Scotch, Valerie Smaldone

On April 16th, 2009, five year old Frankie Flora was tragically and horrifically attacked by a pit bull right near my own hometown. Thankfully, Frankie survived, but he will be scarred and need many, many surgeries that insurance doesn't cover. I'm a mom of three and this story touched my heart. So, I have helped to organize a fundraiser to help cover Frankie's costs. To do this, I reached out to some awesome celebrities who have graciously helped me put together a fantastic set of raffle prizes.

I wanted to thank the amazing rock group 3 Doors Down who donated an autographed drumskin and photo! Thanks to Taylor Hicks, who is sending along an autographed copy of his latest album! Best selling author James Frey sent along two autographed books, including A Million Little Pieces! Best selling author Allison Winn Scotch, author of Time of My Life, is sending along copies of her books. New York personality Valerie Smaldone has tapped into her sources for some great prizes as well! The generosity has been overwhelming and it's absolutely touching. If you are a celeb or represent a celeb and can donate a prize for our July 11th event, I'd really appreciate it. In the meantime, celebrate the amazing generosity of these celebrities and support them in what they do. They truly have a heart of gold.

Thanks,
Lisa

Taylor Hicks Sings For American Idol

First, our congradulations goes to those who made it to American Idol top 4 list this evening. Few very interesting things happened during the American Idol April 29, 2009. American Idol season 5 winner Taylor Hicks returned to the idol stage to sing his latest single Seven Mile Breakdown.

Adam is in the bottom 3 of Idol This Week on April 29. This was the evening when American Idol when from top 5 to top 4.

The biggest shock of the night as American Idol dwindled its numbers to four was not who got sent home, but who was in the Bottom 3. At this point, at least one person had to grace the stools for the first time, but this week we got two newbies.
In the end though, it was Matt who was sent home, as expected. It was only two weeks ago, Matt was in this same spot and was spared by the judges save. I dont think anyone expected him to win after that, but at least we got to hear him perform a couple more times.
Meanwhile,'American Idol' Season 5 winner Taylor Hicks has gone country! Well, at least a little bit. The Alabama native, known for his blues and soul music, is reportedly shipping his new single, 'Seven Mile Breakdown,' to country radio stations next month. Listen to the song after the jump, then tell us whether you think it sounds country.

Hicks' 2006 self-titled debut album sold more than a million copies. His sophomore album, 'The Distance,' was released last month on his own label, Modern Whomp Records, after the 32-year old musician parted ways with Arista Records. 'What's Right Is Right,' the first single from his new album, made it to No. 22 on the Hot AC charts. 'Seven Mile Breakdown' is the CD's second single. Hicks will sing it live Wednesday night, as he makes a guest appearance on 'American Idol.'

And finally, guest mentor Jamie Fox performed Blame It. This song was so far away from this weeks theme that I am again wondering why Jamie was a mentor for Rat Pack week. I was really in the mood for more big band tunes and instead I got a plug for Jamies album and his movie.

Taylor Hicks and the Children's Miracle Network

Congratulations to the Children's Miracle Network, founded in 1983 by the Osmond family and John Schneider (oh boy did I crush on him when I was a teen!), for reaching their 25th year doing amazing things for kids! Tomorrow night, they will wrap up their celebration with a special medal ceremony for children who were selected for their courage in overcoming medical obstacles and represent every state in the United States, every province in Canada, and new Children’s Miracle Network hospitals in Ireland and the United Kingdom. Performing at the event is my favorite soul man, Taylor Hicks, as well as Cirque Dreams.

If your kids are healthy, hug them and give thanks. Then, please donate to this great cause.

Until next time,
Lisa

Taylor Hicks turns concerts into fundraisers for tornado victims

I got this in my email the other day. If you're in the area or going to the concert, please try and help out. Thanks!

"Just wanted to touch base and let ya'll know that I am heading to Alabama and I have teamed up with American Red Cross to help our neighbors in need following last week’s severe weather outbreak in Alabama and Georgia. You all know I'm originally from Alabama and I want to do my part in helping those affected by the devastating tornadoes. The Enterprise and Adamsville communities in Alabama were hit hardest by tornados that claimed 8 lives, and destroyed homes and property including Enterprise High School.

My two Birmingham concerts (March 10th and 11th at the Alabama Theater), will serve as venues for Red Cross staff and volunteers to collect donations. Volunteers will collect donations before, during and after the concert benefiting the tornado relief operation in Alabama. Donations can also be made Saturday afternoon at 12:45 while I am visiting Laser’s Edge in Homewood, Alabama. Just look for the Red Cross volunteers and help in assisting our state in this recovery effort."

Thanks!
Taylor Hicks and the Soul Patrol Still Working Hard to Raise $

Another kudos to American Idol Taylor Hicks’ and his Soul Patrollers who helped to raise $725 more dollars for Studio by the Tracks, a small not-for-profit art studio in Irondale, Alabama that helps autistic adults. Read the blurb on Taylor Hicks’ blog, Gray Charles.

Read my article about Studio by the Tracks here. Ila Faye Miller is doing great work there!

Taylor will also be the 2007 Honorary Chairman of the KidOne Mardi Gras Ball on Saturday, February 3, 2007, from 7 p.m. to 12 a.m. at the B&A Warehouse, 1531 1st Avenue South, in Birmingham, Alabama. For more event information, visit www.kidonemardigrasball.com or call 205-978-1014. Special musical guest is The Little Memphis Blues Orchestra and tickets are $125 each. It’s for a great cause, so if you’re in the area, check them out.

According to their website, www.kidone.org, “Kid One Transport was founded in 1997 by a Hoover, Alabama firefighter to bring relief to the thousands of children who were suffering and dying from treatable and even preventable illnesses simply because their parents had no car. It began with one van in Jefferson County and has grown to cover 32 counties statewide. Read the complete history of Kid One here. This small charity has become the source of national attention from organizations such as Johnson & Johnson, the US Department of Health and Human Services and the Children’s Health Fund as a potential national model to solve the transportation dilemma for millions of children nationally. Kid One is the only organization of it’s kind in the nation. Kid One’s singular mission is to provide free rides to children under the age of 19 and expectant mothers. In almost ten years, Kid One has provided over 111,000 trips to children and expectant mothers and driven nearly 2.5 million miles. Click here for the most up-to-date trip and enrollment totals for each region served.”

And let’s not forget Kid One Patrol of Soul which began as a group of Soul Patrollers who produced a Soul Patrol cookbook to raise money for Kid One Transport, raising more than $5300 total profit so far. They then collected over 1080 Beanie Babies for the Kid One children after they couldn’t have their annual holiday party due to budget cuts. They are now working on a children’s cookbook. For more info or to join this group in their hard work, visit www.kidonepatrolofsoul.com.

Charity starts at home, yes, but then it grows and grows and grows…Soooouuullll Patroooolllll! Nice job!
