Avon Foundation's Hope Honors

Looking for a place to donate this holiday season? Consider the Avon Foundation whose causes are breast cancer and domestic violence. They raised a lot of money this year at their awards celebration, but more is always needed.

The Hope Honors, the star-studded eighth annual Avon Foundation Awards Celebration, honored leaders in the causes of breast cancer and domestic violence at Cipriani 42nd Street in New York City. Since its inception in 2001, the Avon Foundation awards celebration has raised $15.6 million, including $1.6 million this year.

Hosting this year’s event were Andrea Jung, Chairman & Chief Executive Officer, Avon Products, Inc. and Carol Kurzig, Executive Director, Avon Foundation. Award presenters and special guests included award-winning actor Patrick Dempsey; celebrity makeup artist and Avon Global Creative Color Director Jillian Dempsey; actress and designer Lauren Conrad; personal finance expert Suze Orman; designer Cynthia Rowley; and renowned breast cancer surgeon and best-selling author, Dr. Susan Love.

The celebratory event culminated with a special musical performance by 19 Recordings/Jive Recording Artist Jordin Sparks.

The Avon Foundation, a public charity, is a global leader and change agent in the causes of breast cancer and domestic violence, and Avon is the largest corporate supporter of the breast cancer cause. These issues continue to be of grave concern: there is a new diagnosis of breast cancer in the U.S. every three minutes, and one in three women worldwide is a victim of violence, while some 10 million children witness domestic violence in the U.S. each year. Since 1992, the Avon Breast Cancer Crusade has supported access to care and finding a cure in more than 50 countries. Avon Speak Out Against Domestic Violence was launched in 2004 and has now rolled out in a dozen countries. In addition, the Avon Foundation supports emergency and disaster relief. Total funds raised and awarded worldwide for all these causes exceed $660 million.

Avon Foundation Awards Recipients

Every year since 2001, the Avon Foundation has recognized individuals, organizations and companies for leadership in the breast cancer and domestic violence causes. This year’s honorees included the following:

The Medical Advancement in Breast Cancer Award was presented by Andrea Jung to Dr. Steve Whitman and Dr. David Ansell for their tireless efforts at identifying causes and solutions to the disparity in breast cancer mortality between black and white women in Chicago, where a black woman is twice as likely to die of breast cancer than her white counterparts. Two black women die each week in Chicago, totaling 111 deaths each year, because they do not have the same access and quality of care as white women. Doctors Whitman and Ansell identified this disparity and now lead a groundbreaking city-wide effort, the Metropolitan Chicago Breast Cancer Task Force, which brings together every key Chicago area hospital and institution, the city and state governments, and women throughout Chicagoland, to collaborate on ending this disparity.

The Community Advocacy Champion Award was presented by Andrea Jung to The Northern Westchester Shelter, a highly effective private non-profit organization founded in 1980 in Pleasantville, NY, to provide a safe haven and caring services to survivors of domestic violence. Beyond the impact on their own community, the Northern Westchester Shelter programs provide a model that other shelters emulate. The award will be accepted by Executive Director CarlLa Horton. In addition to their efforts to assist domestic violence victims, the Northern Westchester Shelter partnered with the Avon Foundation to create a unique video, which will be shown at The Hope Honors, to increase awareness of domestic violence and provide hope that the cycle of abuse can be broken. The video has been distributed to domestic violence programs nationwide since its completion in spring 2008.

The Women’s Empowerment Crusader Award was presented by Suze Orman to Sandi Gallagher, an Avon Sales Representative from Dracut, MA, in recognition of her personal work on behalf of victims of domestic violence. The Crusader award recognizes an Avon Sales Representative or Sales Manager who has demonstrated outstanding philanthropic efforts in the community. In her Avon career Sandi has achieved the level of Unit Leader, and she is also a dental assistant. In 2007 Sandi was the recipient of an Avon Hello Tomorrow Fund award, a cash award to individuals to support programs or projects that empower women. Sandi volunteers her services to support pro-bono reconstructive dental treatments for victims of domestic violence at the all-volunteer St. Luke Dental Clinic, and she donated her $5,000 Hello Tomorrow Fund award to this program. Through her work at the Clinic, Sandi has helped restore not only many women’s smiles, but also their self confidence and ability to build a new life.

The Avon Foundation Safety Net awards provide funds to hospital and clinics that provide breast health services for the medically underserved in their community. Jillian and Patrick Dempsey presented the 100th Avon Foundation Safety Net grant to the Patrick Dempsey Center for Cancer Hope & Healing at Central Maine Medical Center to provide state-of-the art digital mammography equipment as well as patient navigator staff. The grant will enable Central Maine Medical Center to reach community members in Lewiston and the surrounding rural area, including Somali refugees, and link women in need to cutting-edge breast cancer detection and treatment services. This award will be accepted by Mary Dempsey and Kerry Irish, Director of the Dempsey Center, on behalf of Central Maine Medical Center.

New this year is the m.powerment awards, recognizing programs focused on empowering young women to prevent dating abuse and partner violence. The m.powerment campaign was created by mark, Avon’s boutique beauty brand, and grants were announced by Lauren Conrad to seven domestic violence agencies nationwide. Representing one of the recipient organizations were Tracey Weber from the New York City Mayor’s Office to Combat Domestic Violence and Rahquan Brown, a Peer Educator with the New York City Healthy Relationship Training Academy.

The Avon Foundation Hall of Fame Award recognizes the support of companies that have shown a consistent, significant commitment to the Avon Foundation mission. This year Andrea Jung inducted Verla International, a consulting company for beauty product development, manufacturing and distribution; and Li & Fung USA, a leading consumer goods supply chain management company. Both have been generous allies that are helping bring the Avon Foundation closer to the goal of eradicating breast cancer and domestic violence.

"celebrate the knowledge of a dangerous, crazy father"

Reader Kat has emailed me yesterday this photo of her husband's back:

tattoo_shi1shou4wei1kuang2fu4

He got it done four years ago and the characters should be Knowledge, Loyalty, Courage, Warrior, & Father.

Since Alan just got back from Japan, I forwarded this to him. Here is what Alan concludes:

Besides the terrible calligraphy, the character is missing a dot at the upper right-hand corner. Also, the stroke at the bottom center of 寿 is supposed to be a separate dot rather than the incorrect connected stroke pointing down and to the right that we see.

Anyway, the characters mean roughly as follows:
knowledge, consciousness
寿 congratulations, celebration, long life, sushi
danger, dangerous
crazy, insane, mad
father

Is this supposed to mean "celebrate the knowledge of a dangerous, crazy father" or something?

I don't get the whole picture but it doesn't sound very complementary to the "father." The characters do not seem to mean anything like they think they do.

Jesse Cutler and the importance of music education

Arts programs are getting cut from school nationwide. Did you watch the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade? Those schools and their marching bands that participated wouldn't be there without the arts programs in schools. My son and daughter are musicians who are being taught in school to play. My son plays the tuba and trumpet and my daughter is just starting out on the violin. These programs are vital to our children's education.

Who's Jesse Cutler? From his website, "Jesse Cutler has spent an illustrious career, beginning at age 12, as a musician, composer, actor, producer, entrepreneur and even a Playgirl centerfold. Starting in New York City in the 1960s and then in Los Angeles from the early ‘70s through the late ‘90s, Jesse performed with his bands and in the original cast of Godspell on Broadway, made records that saw Billboard’s Top 100, formed his own companies and appeared on TV and radio and in national print."

Jesse Cutler, a Grammy Award-winning musician, is now the author of StarLust: The Price of Fame (Morgan James, 2008). Ten percent of the proceeds of the book benefit music education through the Guitar Center Music Foundation. It's a good cause and a good book.

Link to buy StarLust: The Price of Fame (Morgan James, 2008).

Here is an excerpt from the book printed with Jesse's permission:

MUSIC IS THE MAGIC
The body of my first guitar, that Harmony acoustic, was too big for me at first. Its length and width actually forced me to stretch the muscles of my upper torso, and as I grew physically, I learned how to fit around her and she around me. My guitar became my passion. She was the nurturing mother who would soothe my troubles. She became a true friend with whom I could laugh, sing, cry, and think. While cradling my guitar, I felt powerful, and I progressed in my abilities. As I observed my improvements, as subtle as they may have been, I developed a very special relationship with music. Here was something that responded sincerely to my innermost feelings and desires.

One evening, my father was walking down the five steps to my sanctuary in the basement and seemed quite impressed with my dedication to the guitar that he’d brought home to me. “How would you like to take lessons, have a teacher?” he asked. I just sat thinking in front of my little chrome music stand with the beginner’s version of “Fly Me To the Moon,” to see if he really meant it or not.

I looked up at him a minute later and said, “You know Dad, I would really love to have a teacher.”

Well, there’s a fellow I met in Valley Stream who has his own studio where he teaches during the day. At night he plays professionally with his own band. His name is Joey Polaris,” my father spouted with conviction. “I’ll set it up one evening this week, okay?”

“You got a deal,” I replied with enthusiasm.

My father, a very agile person, quickly vanished, leaving me to continue practicing my song.

A few days later my father came home and told me, “Tonight we’re gonna meet the guitar teacher, Chuck. Be ready after dinner.” My father had a peculiar twinkle in his eye—one I had never seen before. As we pulled out of our garage I felt as though I was beginning the first stages for something in the future, something big and very exciting, something I had never experienced before. After a couple of weeks of lessons, I felt comfortable with Joey, and my father was glad my lessons proved worthwhile. Joey even started coming to my house for the lessons.

After our fifth session, while we were going over fingering techniques, scales, and bar chords, my father came downstairs to the basement and asked Joey if I was a worthy student. Joey replied without reservation, “Lou, your son is not only my best student, but this kid is a natural. In a few more weeks he’ll be playing as well as me. How’s that for a reference?”

My father was delighted and probably felt that his money was well spent. I, of course, was pumped with enthusiasm and motivated to continue until I stumbled upon a tremendously important question: Was I to continue learning to perfect playing other people’s music, or was I to expand my imagination and create my own melodies and compose my own songs? I reflected back to that day when I returned home from summer camp, asking myself out loud, “Are there any more songs left to be written?” The answer, I joyously decided, was a definite Y-E-S!

With that revelation, my hands were untied and my mind was totally free to create any configuration of notes I desired as long as it didn’t resemble any other sixteen bars that already existed. I was blessed like a painter with a palate full of unlimited colors, which could be blended and brushed on an unlimited number of canvasses. My guitar had an unlimited supply of notes that I could manipulate into something that sounded good to me. And I was thrilled. I could excel at this. I had a purpose in life that went beyond merely wanting to impress girls—even though that has always been one of the best side benefits of playing the guitar. Now I could write music. I could create wonderful music on this instrument.

Save the Cheerleader, Save the World from Hottest Tots and Celebrity Couples

Johan Samuel is the son of super model Heidi Klum and singer/songwriter Seal - Photo courtesy of JustJared.com)Forbes' Hottest Hollywood Tots is such a crock of publicity horse cocky, I want to steam myself under a hot shower for the next fifteen minutes just to loosen the dibbles.

Joel McHale said exactly what was on my mind - why in the world is Forbes magazine venturing into the world of celebrity fluffaby? Did editors throw the financial sector overboard now that America is knee deep in meltdown economics?

"Oh, we can't break even publishing financial pontifications. Let's add a celebrity toddlers hot or not contest. That'll bring in people clicking like mad."

You'd better believe I'm mad, uptight and mad's more like it. Mad that I had to click through five crappy millileters each time I wanted more information about the listed tots. Boy, Forbes' stuff must really be in the toilet to milk so much out of celebrity gossip.

So I'm ending the shennanigans right now by printing their ridiculous exercise in self-preservation, saving you, dear reader, the torture of suffering through another gazilllion of pages from hell.

10. Samantha Sheen (Denise Richards and Charlie Sheen)
9. Sean and Preston Federline (Britney and Fed-Ex)
8. David Banda (Madonna)
7. Matilda Rose Ledger (Michelle Williams and Heath Ledger)
6. Cruz Beckham (Posh and Becks)
5. Sam Alexis Woods (Tiger and Elin Woods)
4-2. Pax, Zahara, and Shiloh Jolie-Pitt (in that order)(Brangelina)
1. Suri Cruise (TomKat)

And as long as we're on the subject, I have only this to ask ... WHAT WERE THEY THINKING?

How could anyone in their right mind include tug-of-war toy David Banda but omit Kingston Rossdale? Or Johan Samuel? Or Harlow Winter Kate Madden, for that matter?

And what about the inferiority complexes foisted upon helpless and defenseless celebritots who through no fault of their own are subjected to arbitrary and capricious rejection every time they hear the name "Forbes?" It's not like these children ask to be paraded around like a traveling museum. The least we can do is feign a little respect for their privacy.

Not so when it comes to 2008's Best and Worst Celebrity Couples list. You'll also slog through a ton of advertising, but at the end of the day, won't feel any worse for the wear.

Unlike hot to trot celebritots, there's the trade-off component of choosing a profession that unfolds in the public eye. Celebrities expect and anticipate a certain amount of ogle. It's the American way, for goodness sake!

For those reasons and the fact that only one couple per family posted in the best and worst section, no spoilers about 2008's Best and Worse. Go ahead, get your hands dirty.

I won't tell if you won't.

Movie and TV Roles Keep Coming For Actress Anoush NeVart!

Multi-talented actress Anoush NeVart has just booked and shot the new John Welles TV pilot with the working title of "LAPD". Her role as the Armenian mother, "Agata", was the perfect character for Anoush to play; she lived in Yerevan, Armenia for 5 years. She says that she really got to know the people, the customs, the traditions, dialect, trials and tribulations of this amazing culture into which she was born. The pilot should be airing in January of 2009!

Anoush has a series of other projects in the works. She will be seen in the Comcast National commercials that start airing in November 2008, as well as a remake of the feature film "FAME", with a release date in 2009/2010. Her first foreign film, "The Quest", directed by the amazing Max Bartoli, will be shot in Rome in 2009!

Anoush has spent most of her life as a musician and began acting 4 years ago. Since then, she has booked roles on such TV shows as The Unit, ER, NipTuck, The War at Home, Judging Amy, and General Hospital, as well as a notable role in the feature film "Must Love Dogs" as Mrs. Parseghian. She originated the role of "Azniv" in the 2006 World Premiere of "Little Armenia" at the Fountain Theatre in Los Angeles resulting in rave reviews for Anoush in the LA Times and Backstage West.

Now, saying Anoush is multi-talented is practically an understatement! She's an actress, professional pianist and accompanist, recording artist, vocal coach, song coach, backup singer, composer, and was even nominated for Grammy award!! Not to mention, she also speaks French, Greek, Italian, and Russian!

Anoush says her life has changed dramatically as a result of becoming a Scientologist. "I have greater certainty in who I am, the decisions I'm making, the rightness of my decisions, with greater love and compassion for my fellow travellers (ARC), much more effective communication skills, and a sense of confidence that is worth all the tea in China!" Anoush also says that it wasn't so long ago that her life felt like a constant struggle. Emotional ups and downs were the norm, and that nagging sense of "something's missing" permeated her daily life. She says it's only been a year, really, that all of this has changed, thanks to L. Ron Hubbard's technology (Scientology), and most importantly, the APPLICATION of LRH tech. "Knowledge is fairly useless if I don't apply it", she said in a recent interview. "It's like having a bank account with money in it but you don't know the account number so you have no access to the riches in the account."

Kristen Stewart's Sexiest Vampire

The highly-anticipated flick Twilight opens today and like everyone else, we are over the moon excited! (2,000 screenings are already sold out!) The time has come to finally check out these sexy stars in action. But before we do, read up on what Kristen Stewart had to say about working with the leading vampire himself, Robert Pattinson, and why she thinks he's "pretty sexy."

"He's like a little tortured artist. He's British. He's tall," the actress said. "He always looks like he's thinking about something. And he's quite witty. So he's pretty sexy."

And that mane of his: "He never stops touching it. People love that."

Guess what Pattinson did on set?! He proposed to this heroine!

"I mean, I don't know how serious he was, but yes," Stewart said. "We spent a lot of time together, a lot of like really heightened time."

What does Pattinson say about all of this: "I can't remember proposing to her. It used to be my thing, I would propose all the time," Pattinson said. "Just go up to someone, you know, and say I love you or ask them to marry you. It always works."

I think we're melting. The movie hits theaters TODAY!

Scary Obsessed Fan Rattles Brad Pitt on Oprah

Replication of Brad Pitt ice man tattoo courtesy of LaLateNews

Yesterday, I got a long hard look at myself in the TV set. It was not by any means a pretty sight.

Brad Pitt returned to the set of Oprah plugging the Christmas Day release of The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, a movie about a New Orleans man who ages backwards. I hear the special effects are to die for. Heck, the movie was in post-production for almost a year.

Aside from styling reminiscent of the late Clark Gable, Pitt filled the studio with the twinkle of Hollywood stardust, what I call the magic of Hollywood. He’s a person, yes, like everyone else, but with killer good looks and notable acting talent. I hardly ever watch daytime television, but this was one show I wanted to see as it aired.

That Oprah, I have to hand it to her. She’s now peppering celebrity interviews with home audience questions via Skype. These are not your grandmother’s cheesy call-ins with background pictures but real time webcam "I see you, you see me" exchanges. Skype definitely made the show more engaging. One bride-to-be appeared in her bedroom with a bed full of family and friends.

Top of the heap in clout and earning power, Pitt stands toe to toe with the greats, actors admired for craft and popularity not necessarily due to peer recognition, but for opening movies and resonating with a crowd. He’s a big fish in a huge pond glutted with wannabes. Everyone wants a piece of him no matter how those pieces are derived.

The Q and A ran rather smoothly until Christina from Ontario questioned Pitt about his body tattoos. At that point, the exchange turned on its head.

(video may be removed due to copyright and if so, don’t count on a replacement)

In the first place, Christina knew way too much about Pitt for comfort, like prey studied by stalker before ambush. Clearly, Pitt became very uncomfortable, refusing to divulge any personal information or put his tats on display. It was comical, really, in a "Lady, who are you and why do you know so much about my ice man tattoo?" kind of way. Then suddenly, it felt kind of scary. Poor Christina, I could see she felt it too.

At that moment, I glimpsed my reflection. Figuratively speaking of course, but no less startling. I too feed off Hollywood minutiae, petty details of lives steeped in fantasy glamour. What’s the harm in wanting to see a decorated body part? Why even decorate if not to show off?

As Pitt lamented the ever present din of paparazzi, as well as fences and walls he would rather remove but requires for privacy, I too wanted the inside scoop. As if answering Christina’s question might reveal the essence of this movie star’s shine, I really wanted to know about his tats. So did Oprah, though immediately after gentle prodding she backed down.

Despite being offensive or intrusive, Pitt owed a better answer to his fans. He chose acting for his livelihood and should expect people crossing the line. Without fans who feed off his star power, he’s like any other bit player on Broadway.

On the other hand, I can’t imagine what it must be like to live in a fish bowl. The constant presence of cameras and strangers approaching wherever one goes must be unnerving. Can a fan’s desire to connect go too far?

At the end of the day, none of it matters, gossip tidbits or glitterati lives. Hearing Pitt speak about his children, life with Angie, or his Benjamin Buttons co-star, the fabulous Cate Blanchett, another guest on the show, won’t change the world or cure cancer. It’s entertainment like a good book or a day at the races, nothing more than fleeting fancy to pass the time.

Bedheaded Winona Ryder Falls Ill on Trans-Continental Flight

Photo courtesy of Justin - National Photo Group

Willowy "never can seem to get her act together" Winona Ryder was rushed on a stretcher to Hillingdon Hospital in West London, England after passing out aboard British Airways. The flight was en route to Heathrow Airport from LAX.

When it became clear a female passenger -- presumably Ryder -- "required medical attention," the flight crew requested priority landing. Ryder's publicist, Mara Buxbaum, said the actress was taken to the hospital only as a precaution and quickly released.

They can sanitize this one all they like and not convince me Ryder wasn't doped up on drugs. Pictures snapped at LAX show her clad from head to toe in black hiding sunglasses-obscured eyes. Some paparazzo managed to penetrate the barrier, revealing a tenuous and frail looking Ryder.

Daily Mail surmises an overdose of anti-anxiety medication, pointing to Ryder's well-established hatred for air travel. I'd say that's par for the course.

British Air doesn't call ahead for priority landing unless a passenger is seriously ill. Reportedly, Ryder fell unconscious while sitting down, slumping forward in her seat until help arrived. That's a far cry from the publicist's description of a woman in good health.

Clearly, the surrounding circumstances point to more than a brief illness. Ryder looked fragile and unhinged.

Instead of covering up the likely nature of Ryder's "illness," her publicist should be contacting producers of Celebrity Rehab.

John Travolta stars as the voice of super-dog "Bolt" in the upcoming Disney animated feature that also stars the voice of teen superstar Miley Cyrus! The movie opens this Friday November 21st. It looks pretty good!

Travolta has always been one of my favorite actors. I've probably seen more of his movies than any other actor's. And I really like Miley Cyrus too, she's pretty spunky.

Time for Joe Lieberman to Stop Straddling

Rejoice! Sanity has been restored to Washington.

Senate Democrats demonstrated admirable ability to move beyond party pettiness. Senator Joe Lieberman, vocal supporter of Republican Presidential Nominee John McCain, will keep his chairmanships of the Homeland Services and Governmental Affairs Committees.

And in a gesture of empowerment to its more liberal factions, Senate Majority Leaders removed Lieberman from the Environment and Public Works Committee, a mere wrist slap yet unmistakable sign of the times.

But let me get something straight. Lieberman, the Democrat running mate of Al Gore in the 2000 presidential election turned Independent in a 2006 bid to keep his Senate seat, remains a member of the Connecticut Democratic State Central Committee as well as a registered Democrat?

No wonder influential Connecticut Democrats are gunning to kick him out.

Politicians shouldn’t be allowed to govern as Independents while continuing to register with an opposing party. It’s like polygamy, or in this case bigamy, with Connecticut Democrats getting bitch slapped whenever Daddy plugs the other side.

I’m all for liberty, independent thinking, and voting one’s conscious, but when those actions threaten the agenda of your registered party, it’s time to move on. Willingly or with a friendly shove.

It’s time for Lieberman to stand up for political integrity, not the self-serving politics we all so desperately wish to leave behind.

Angelina Gets Emotional

When asked how her late mother Marcheline influenced her latest role in the film The Changeling at a London press conference, this was Angelina's response:

Some Barack Obama Firsts I Don't Want to Know

Barack Obama's historic win of the presidency was more than just an iconic moment in American history. It was a vindication of our core belief that anything is possible in the home of the free and the brave.

When wife Michelle, and daughters Malia and Sasha stand on the Capitol steps this January 20, 2009, beaming with pride as the first American of African descent -- President-Elect Barack Obama, their husband and father -- places his hand on the bible, swearing an oath of allegiance to the United States Constitution to uphold fundamental principles of fairness and liberty, the whole world will take stock of America's historic leap forward as we, the people, at last turn the page on one of the hardest fought victories in recent memory.

Still, I am humbly reminded that with every silver lining comes a cloud. You see, up until the precise moment of Obama's historic swearing in ceremony (and perhaps for a wee bit after), the entire world must endure a heavy burden indeed.

An unprecedented barrage of firsts.

The first time a major American newspaper endorses the Democratic Party's nominee for president.

The first time a man with African roots wins a presidential election.

The first time that man, Barack Obama, takes a top secret security level tour of the White House.

The first time the transition of a U.S. presidency is transparently documented on the Internet.

The first press conference of Barack Obama.

And on and on she goes. I'm not sure how much more I can stand. Come on, admit it. You're getting sick of it too.

I imagine there are will be many firsts for the new President-Elect, his family and for lack of a better word, entourage, but do we have to hear about every single one in mind-numbing detail? Here are a few I'd rather not:

-The first time Oprah Winfrey flies her entire studio audience to Washington, D.C. for the inauguration.

-The first time any type of stereotypical ethnic food is served on the White House menu.

Okay. Okay. No flames. I know I went overboard on those last ones. Let's hope all the news outlets exercise greater restraint.

Top Ten Most Likely Types to Create Obnoxious Motrin Advertisement

Rather than nervously await the almost inevitable pink-slip, some advertising crony up and committed career suicide. Ah, just in time for the holidays.

I mean, who else would create a Motrin ad campaign vilifying baby carriers as hernia inducing torture chambers causing cuckoo bird crazy eyes to sprout on their child-cradling fashion victims?

Only a person without enough guts to ask for a long vacation. Or these top ten most likely types to create an obnoxious Motrin ad:

10. Self-hating embittered shrew who despises children, their cutesy noises, and smelly diaper leaks.

9. Neanderthal caveman from the popular GEICO ads.

8. Womanizing, power lusting, money grubbing playah with a madonna-slut complex.

7. New intern whose only creative talent is pleasuring the boss.

6. Aging hunchback who had her tubes tied about an hour after giving birth.

5. Perfectionist type-A super-achiever who brings home the bacon, fries it up in the pan, and never lets you forget you're a man.

4. Doormat push-over who can be talked into anything, including wearing a sling carrier to hold someone else's twenty-five pound baby during a trip to the mall.

3. Self-absorbed socially clueless ADHD person too busy maneuvering an unforgiving and perilous world.

2. Hermaphrodite.

1. Man living at home with his mother, seven cats, and one helluva post-nasal drip.

Is it too late to short sell JNJ?

And The Axe Goes To -

Sadness this week as NBC's Lipstick Jungle has been canceled! I hate to say goodbye to Victory, Nico, and Wendy. Only in its sophomore year, the show has taken us through death, adultery, heartbreak, date nights in NYC's hotspots, many a laugh and a steamy scene, and a slight familiar resemblance to Sex and the City. Goodbye girls, you will be missed!

Start a 401K and Hope for the Best

I has a money now what do I do wif it?
Funny, I was thinking exactly the same thing last night while trying to balance my checkbook.

Problem was, the amount of money I have to balance wouldn't fill a kid's piggy bank. The recession is stretching its boney fingers around my neck like a creepy unrelenting death grip. Had to drink a strong cup of java just to distract myself.

Seeing kitty contemplate her windfall evoked a good giggle, reminding me once again the best things in life truly are free.

Neiman Marcusgate Threatens Future Candidacy of Sarah Palin

Governor Palin clothing allowance abuses come to light after election
In the days following Election 2008's historic outcome, scads of Conservatives publicly bemoan rabid personal attacks against Republican V.P. nominee Sarah Palin and the failure of Senator John McCain, her vanquished running mate, to personally silence detractors.

They can't understand how McCain could defend his Democratic opponent, Barack Obama, at a campaign rally, yet allow what's considered malicious gossip to flourish against Governor Palin.

Well, I very well may have happened upon the most plausible explanation to date.

"Spiritual Strength"

HS reader Anna sent this photo to our attention:

http://jjb.yuku.com/topic/418982/t/New-tattoo.html

Its owner, LuvBug, said she got this exact tattoo along with two other friends and it meant "emotional and spiritual strength. "

Besides the obvious botchery of two characters, the phrase is not 100% grammatically correct.

In my opinion, the proper version should be or . However, Alan is much lenient & thinks is good enough.

MC Lyte featured in Celebrity Magazine

MC Lyte
The celebrity interview this month in Celebrity Magazine is with hip-hop artist MC Lyte.

She has been a Scientologist since 2003. Here are a few quotes from the interview:

"When I found Scientology, it was this real stuff that could better me."

[Speaking about other's advising against her starting her new group] "... it was like this small, little picture that someone else saw of me - like they couldn't get beyond what they had seen before. And Scientology helped me to know that I can be bigger."

[How to get started in Scientology] "... come in and take a personality test. That test can really flip you out, because just from answering simple questions, it'll tell you a lot about yourself."

[Her final advice] "... be unique. Be an individual. Do what your heart says to do. Do what your soul takes you or moves you to doing, and don't get caught up in other people's fears."

Britney Joins Madonna

At Dodger Stadium last night in L.A., Britney Spears was reunited with Madonna (and Justin Timberlake, yes, the two did cross paths!) for her Sticky and Sweet tour. Greeting her with a kiss on the hand and a "Hi Britney," Madonna was joined onstage by Spears during her song "Human Nature." Spears looked great in black and white as she sang the last chorus of the song. And as for the reunion with Timblerlake, the two said a simple "hi" to each other.
